Teal Takes Game One of the Chant World Series 7-4

CONWAY, S.C. – The Teal Team defeated the Black Team 7-4 in game one of the 2009 Chanticleer World Series, held at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field Oct. 30. The Chanticleer World Series is a three-game intersquad series that wraps up Coastal Carolina baseball’s fall practice. The Teal team got on the board in the bottom of the first, as Tom LaStella homered to center field, bringing in Chance Gilmore, who walked with one out in the inning. The Teal team made it 5-0 in the second as Mike Tevlin walked, moved to third on a hit from Keith Hardwick and a throwing error. Tevlin would score on a run-scoring groundout by TJ Young. Rico Noel then hit a laser over the left field wall for the Teal team’s fifth run of the game. Josh Conway made it 6-0 Teal in the third as he homered to left field. The Black answered back in the top of the fourth as Daniel Bowman singled and moved to third on a single from Steve Davis. Both runners advanced on a balk, scoring Bowman. Doug Fleming then brought in Davis with a two-run home run to left center. Teal would add insurance in the sixth as Gilmore roped a home run to right center, making it 7-3. The Black team rallied in the eighth and final inning as Fleming doubled in Davis, but Keith Hessler would get the final two outs with two runners on to end the game. Conway and Tevlin had two hits apiece for the Teal, while Fleming and Davis had two hits apiece for the Black. Fleming drove in three runs, while Noel and LaStella had two RBI apiece. On the mound, Austin Fleet earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings. Matt Laney also posted zeroes in his two innings of work with three strikeouts, while Hessler had five strikeouts in two innings. For the Black team, Cody Wheeler allowed just one hit in two innings, while Matt Rein had a strikeout in an inning of relief. The Chanticleers also participated in Pro Day at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field, as all eight pitchers who threw are draft-eligible in 2010. Game two of the Chanticleer World Series will take place Saturday, Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m. |
