CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina baseball team started its 2011 fall World Series Friday afternoon with the Bronze squad edging the Black squad 4-2, following a one-and-a-half hour session of showing their skills to at least 25 Major League Baseball scouts at Watson Stadium.

In the winning effort sophomore Jacob May was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a single, while leadoff hitter Luke Willis finished the day with two singles. Senior Rich Witten led the Black team at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance that included a pair of singles.

Prior to the start of the Chanticleer World Series, the Coastal Carolina position players ran the 60-yard dash, took infield/outfield and had batting practice for the scouts on hand.

The game started with Josh Conway forcing two consecutive fly outs to left field before Witten singled down the left side for the first hit of the game. Bryce Dial drove Witten home with a triple that found the base of the left field wall to put the Black clad Chants up 1-0.

The Bronze squad responded in the bottom of the inning with a Willis leadoff single to center field off junior Devin Bradley. Nick Sergakis would move Willis to second on a well placed sacrifice bunt. May then stepped to the plate and roped a single into center field to score Willis. May would be driven home one batter later on a Sloan Gilliam single to right field.

Both pitching staffs would settle in over the next four innings as neither side could muster a scoring opportunity.

May added the Bronze team's third run of the afternoon as he launched a solo shot over the right-center field wall in the sixth inning.

The Black would get one run back in the top of the seventh as Justin Creel scored after reaching base on a hit by pitch. Keith Picconi picked up the RBI as he singled through the right side to drive home Creel.

Despite being up 3-2, as part of the three-game series, the Bronze team batted in the bottom of the ninth and tacked on an extra run. Reynoso scored on Adam Eggnatz single to provide the final run of the game and secure the 4-2 Bronze victory.

Conway, Stefan del Pino, Aaron Burke and Woody Nisbet pitched for the Bronze team giving up five hits. del Pino recorded the only two Bronze strikeouts of the day.

Black team pitchers Austin Wallace, Jackson Geary, Tyler Poole, Dial and Ryan Connolly combined to fan ten Bronze hitters. Games two and three of the Chanticleer World Series will be Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. at Watson Stadium. Admission is free.
