Teal Takes Game One of the Chanticleer World Series 5-2
CONWAY, S.C. – The Teal team took game one of the 2007 Chanticleer World Series 5-2 Oct. 12 in Conway, S.C. The Coastal Carolina University baseball team is finishing up fall practice with its annual intersquad matchup.
Redshirt junior Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) got the Teal on the board in the bottom of the first with a home run. The game would remain scoreless until the fourth, when redshirt sophomore Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Socastee) singled, stole second and scored on a single from junior Adam Rice (Murphy, Texas/Elgin C.C.). The Black team cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth as freshman Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) scored an unearned run as junior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) reached on an error.
The Teal team would score three runs in the bottom of the frame. Redshirt freshman Dustin King (Conway, S.C./Carolina Forest) walked and scored on a single from freshman Brandon Stagliano (Springfield, Pa./Springfield). Junior David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Southern Alamance) then brought in Stagliano with a single. Sappelt stole third and scored on a passed ball, making it 5-1 Teal. The Black team scored in the top of the seventh on a groundout by sophomore Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) that scored junior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).
Senior Joey Haug (Holt, Mo./Maple Woods C.C.) earned the win in the seven-inning contest. He struck out five and gave up three hits in four innnings. Junior Jeff Richard (West Bloomfield, Mich./Central Michigan) pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn the save. Freshman Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville) allowed four earned runs and six hits in 4.1 innings for the Black team.
The Chanticleer World Series continues Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10:30 a.m.
