Baseball to Host Czech Republic National Team
CONWAY - For the second time in three years, the Coastal Carolina baseball team will host the Czech Republic National baseball team for an exhibition game on Thursday, Oct. 12, at Springs Brooks Stadium. The game is set to begin at 6 pm, admission is free and there will be open seating.
Coastal and the Czech Republic last met on Oct. 8, 2015, the fall prior to CCU's National Championship. Like that game, this contest will be a regulation, nine-inning game and both teams will use wood bats.
While admission is free, the Chanticleer baseball program will use the game as an opportunity to raise money for cancer research as October is breast cancer awareness month.
"Everyone has someone -- family or friends -- that is fighting or has fought cancer," CCU head coach Gary Gilmore said. "The last two times Coastal baseball asked its fans to donate in connection with caner, Teal Nation responded by giving nearly $10,000 combined. Like so many other times Coastal has asked fans to help people in need, I expect this time to be no different in terms of it being a great success. And, I think our fans will also enjoy getting to know a lot of new faces for the 2018 season."
Fans are asked to enter through Gate 2, located to the right of the baseball ticket booth. Chanticleer baseball players will be posted throughout the stadium to accept donations. (Note: The concession stand will be open, with limited selections.)
The last time the two squads met, the Czech Republic National Team scored five runs off five hits in the top of the eighth inning to claim a 5-1 victory over Coastal Carolina before a crowd of 1,500. Coastal Carolina struck first to take a1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Marks drew a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a fly out by Michael Paez. Connor Owings followed with an RBI single to bring home Marks.
The game became a pitchers' duel until the top of the eighth inning when the Czech Republic exploded for their five runs. The visitors started the frame with singles from Petr Cech, who was 2-for-4, and pinch hitter Tomas Junec. Pinch hitter Petr Zyma followed with a walk to load the bases for Petr Sila, who delivered a two-run single. Matej Hejma, who was 2-for-4, followed with a two-run triple off the center field wall and scored one batter later on Jakub Malik's sacrifice fly.
NOTE: CCU Fall World Series will be played October 29-31 and November 1-2. Admission is free.
