Coastal's Keith Hessler Promoted to MLB with Arizona
CONWAY - Keith Hessler, who pitched at Coastal Carolina from 2009-11, was promoted to Major League Baseball by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Hessler has pitched in three levels of Minor League Baseball this summer and has compiled a 4-2 record with a 1.68 ERA through 47 relief appearances in the Diamondbacks farm system. In five seasons of professional baseball, Hessler has pitched in 180 games, including 35 starts, with a 4.07 ERA and recorded 407 strikeouts in 386.2.
Hessler was a 28th-round selection by Arizona in the 2010 draft, but the left-hander returned to the Chanticleers for the 2011 season before signing as a free agent with Diamondbacks following CCU's 2011 NCAA Regional appearance.
With the Chanticleers, Hessler pitched in 61 games with 31 starts and posted a career ERA of 4.90. In 104.2 innings, he posted 85 strikeouts.
Hessler becomes the ninth Chanticleer to reach Major League Baseball, joining Tommy LaStella, Mike Costanzo, Ddavid Sappelt, Tom Romano, Kirt Manwaring, Luis Lopez, Keith Glauber and Mickey Brantley.
