The Chanticleers responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs of their own. Tommy Baldridge was hit by a pitch and moved to third on David Andersons double to left center. Chris Raber grounded out to score Baldridge, followed by Derek Martins single to right center to score
SJU responded immediately in the top of the fifth with four runs. Chris Joachim singled to lead off the inning, stole second and was joined on the paths by Jeff Grantham after a walk. Sam DeLuca singled home Joachim, but the big blow was the shot by Chris Anninos over the left centerfield fence to make it 5-3 Red Storm. It was Anninos third home run of the day, hitting two shots against VCU.
Coastal knotted up the game in the sixth with a pair of runs of their own.
The Chants pushed across the final run in the bottom of the eighth.
Nick McCully came out of the bullpen for the final two innings for CCU, striking out three of his six straight batters retired to earn his seventh victory of the year. Justin Gutsie got his first decision of the year in the loss after giving up the unearned run and no hits in three innings of work.
Doyle was a key for CCU with two RBI on a pair of sacrifice flies. Dom Duggan went 2-for-4, while David Anderson was on base three of his four plate appearances, scoring all three times.
This was the 50th victory for the Chanticleers, the second time in three years that CCU had reached that plateau. It also ties the school record for wins in a single season and is the third time that Coastal has won at least two games in a NCAA Regional (2001 and 2005).
In the opener against Clemson, the opening two and a half innings was an offensive shootout, with the teams combining for 11 runs and the Tigers leading 6-5. Andy DAlessio had a two-run double as a key par of Clemsons four-run first and then homered to center for two more runs in the second.
CCU tied the game in the third on Doyles home run to center to make it six each, but Clemson reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh on DAlessios double that scored Smith on a muffed throw. The Tigers added insurance with four runs in the eighth, led by Marquez Smiths three-run blast over the left field wall to make it 11-6. Coastal did score two more in the top of the ninth on Matt Rademachers shot down the left field line, but could get no closer than 11-8.
Martin was 3-for-5 for Coastal, as was Doyle, while Adam Vrable was 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and one run scored. Clemson was led by DAlessios 3-for-4 outing with four RBI and three runs scored, while Wilson Boyd was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
David Anderson took the loss for CCU after going 6.0 innings and giving up six hits and four runs, three of which were earned. Ryan Hinson got the win for the Tigers after working 1.2 inning of relief and giving up just one hit and getting one strikeout.
