LINCOLN, Neb. EMU catcher Brad Hrovat's RBI-single to center scored Ryan Ford from second with the game-winning run, as fourth-seed Eastern Michigan defeated second-seed Coastal Carolina, 9-8, at the NCAA Lincoln Regional at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park, May 31.
Eastern Michigan (33-27) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when second baseman Tony Palazzolo singled in Brian Bixler from second.
Coastal would even the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth on Ryan McGraws sixth home run of the season. Ryan Goleski would put the Eagles back on top, 3-1, with his 17th home run of the season, on a two-run blast to right center.
EMU would add an insurance run in the sixth on a single by third baseman Derrick Peterson, scoring Tim Clouse. Peterson would the cap off a four-run seventh for EMU on a bases loaded single, scoring Brian Bixler and Clouse.
Coastal would tie the game, 8-8, scoring seven time in the seventh. All seven runs were scored with two outMcGraw ripped s. a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring designated hitter Mike Costanzo and leftfielder Jeff Baker to make it 8-3. Grandstrand followed with an RBI-bloop double, scoring Pinnochio to bring the Chants within four. Powell then kept the inning going with a two-RBI single, scoring McGraw and Grandstrand to bring the Chants within two at 8-6. Powell's hit finally chased Tomey in favor of Matt Onderlinde. Onderlinde subsequently uncorked a wild pitch on his first pitch, sending Powell to third with two out in the frame. Onderline then walked Hasbrouck to put the go-ahead run at the plate in the person of Costanzo. Costanzo then ripped a double just inside the first base bag to tie the game, scoring Powell and pinch-runner Kyle Beall, who was going on the pitch. EMU coach Roger Coryell responded by pulling Onderlinde for Carpenter, who struck out Baker to end the inning.
Eastern Michigan advances to face the loser of he SMS/Nebraska game. Coastal ends it's season at 45-18.
