ROCK HILL , SC Junior Steven Carter tossed a complete game
three-hitter, as the second-seeded Coastal Carolina baseball team defeated the fifth seedCharleston Southern, 7-2 in the opening game of the 2003 Venture
Industries Big South Baseball Tournament, presented by Palmetto Utilities Palmetto
Service, played at the Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C. Coastal Carolina went
to 42-15 on the year, while Charleston Southern fell to 19-36.
Carter, now 10-3 on the year, hurled his second complete of the season,
striking out seven batters while allowing no walks. Robert Swindle
(10-5) suffered the loss for the Bucs despite striking out 11 batters.
Coastal scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning,
as senior Tyler Hasbrouck drove in senior Ryan McGraw, who led off the
inning with a double. However, the lead would be short-lived, as
Charleston Southern would take the lead in the third inning with a pair
of runs with the help of two CCU errors. Billy Dalton drove in the
Buccaneers first run scoring Andrew Grosse, who reached base on the
first CCU error of the inning. Dalton would then advance to second on a
stolen base and score on a Brad Woods single to left field.
Coastal would take the lead in the sixth with a five-run outburst.
McGraw tied the game for CCU when he led off the inning with a solo
blast to right field. Senior Brandon Powell scored CCUs second run of
the inning on a sacrifice bunt by junior Greg Orsimarsi. Brett
Grandstrand scored from third on a throwing error by the CSU
centerfielder to extend the lead to 4-2. Junior Chad Oxendine then drove
in the final two runs on a single to left scoring Hasbrouck and
Orsimarsi, giving the Chants a commanding 6-2 lead. Coastal wrapped up
the scoring in the eighth on a solo home run to left field by senior
Coastal, now 42-15 overall, advances in the winners bracket to face the
winner of the game between #3 Elon and #4 UNC Asheville, Thursday, May
22 at 11 a.m.
