CONWAY - Coastal Carolina sophomore Connor Owings was named first team All-Big South, as voted on by the league's coaches, and classmate Tyler Chadwick was named to the Big South All-Academic team, as voted by the league's sports information directors.

Owings (Leesville, S.C./Gilbert HS) was named to the team as a utility player. He was the lone Chanticleer to play in all 54 games, starting each contest with 30 starts at second base, 17 at first base, five in left field and two at third base. He ranked sixth in the Big South in runs scored (41) and eighth in hits (69). In league games only, he ranked eighth in the conference in batting average (.352), fifth in hits (37), eighth in runs scored (22), eight in total bases (50) and ninth in on base percentage (.425).

Owings, who batted just .220 with 17 hits in 37 games last season, is a candidate for the Gregg Olson Award, honoring college baseball's "Breakout Player of the Year." He leads the team with a .314 batting average, in runs scored (41), doubles (12), home runs (4), slugging percentage (.432) and multi-hit games (20). He additionally is tied for second on the team with 29 RBI and ranks second with 10 stolen bases.

Heading into this week's Big South Tournament, Owings had reached base safely in 19 straight games dating back to an 0-for-5 game in the Radford opener. He started the current streak by going 5-for-5 in game two at Radford and has a hit in 15 of the 19 games, batting .321 (26-for-81) over the span with 21 runs scored.

Chadwick (Waxhall, N.C,/Marvin Ridge HS) was named the All-Academic team after posting a 3.54 grade point average in business management. Chadwick ranks second on the team with a .299 batting average, but posted a .307 mark in league games. He is tied for second on the team with 29 RBI, leading the team in walks (25), on base percentage (.394) and multi-RBI games (9). He had a team-best 19 RBI in league play and led the team with 17 two-out RBI for the season, batting .354 with runners in scoring position.

Chadwick, who played in 48 games with 45 starts - including 42 at catcher, has been an iron man for the Chanticleers. He has started at catcher in 29 of the last 31 games, but has played catcher in all 31. He has caught 263.2 of Coastal's last 275.2 innings. However, he is batting.302 over the span (35-for-116) with a team-best 20 RBI and a team-best 23 walks for a team-best .414 on-base percentage.

Coastal Carolina, seeded sixth, will play third-seed Campbell in the opening round of the 2014 Big South Baseball Championship, held May 20-24 in Rock Hill and hosted by Winthrop. The Chants and Camels will play in Game 2 Tuesday at approximately 1 pm (45 minutes after the conclusion of game one with a 9:30 am start time).
