CONWAY, SC Junior pitcher Steven Carter (9-2) allowed only four hits in 7.1 innings of work, while striking out five batters, as the Coastal Carolina baseball team defeated Charleston Southern, 12-4, Saturday evening at Watson Stadium. Coastal improves to 39-13, 10-5 in the Big South, while Charleston Southern falls to 17-33, 9-11 in the Big South.
Coastal jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning of play. Tyler Hasbrouck drove in the first run of the game on a single to center scoring Brett Grandstrand from second base. The Chants would score their next two runs on bases loaded walks to Jeff Baker and Patrick Nichols. Greg Orsimarsi would drive in the next two runs on a single to left scoring Baker and Steve Pinocchio. Ryan McGraw would close out the CCU scoring in the first with a two-run double to left field.
CCU would extend its lead to 11-0 in the fourth inning. Freshman Mike Costanzo would highlight the inning with a two run home run to center field.
Alan Bontya capped off a four run eighth inning for Charleston Southern with a three run home run to right field.
The final game of this Big South series will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Watson Stadium. Tomorrow will also be the final home game of the 2003 season, as the team will honor its eight seniors in a ceremony before the game.
