CONWAY - Coastal Carolina senior Matt Rein pitched a career-high seven innings and struck out a career-high nine batters in a win over Gardner-Webb to be named the Big South Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week (April 19).
In addition to his career highs, Rein scattered six hits, holding the league's top-hitting team to as .222 batting average, while allowing ZERO runs and ZERO walks to improve to 5-1 overall and lowered his season ERA to 1.61. Rein also Improves to 8-0 in Big South play for his career with 56 career strike outs and just 11 walks in 54.2 Big South career innings.
Of the six hits he allowed versus Gardner-Webb, three were in the first inning and Jacob May threw out a runner at the plate for the third out of the inning. From that point, Rein retired 18 of his final 22 batters. He also had to get four outs in the sixth inning as Dusty Quattlebaum struck out but reached first base on a wild pitch. Undaunted, Rein struck out Scott Coleman looking to end the inning.
