Baseball Defeats The Citadel, 11-6

    

CONWAY, SC — Coastal Carolina put together 13 hits en route to a 11-6 win over the Citadel, Friday evening at Watson Stadium. Coastal improves to 23-7, while The Citadel falls to 19-11.

Steven Carter (6-1) picked up the win, allowing four earned runs, while striking out seven, in earning his fifth straight win on the season. John Ellis suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs in 2-1/3 innings of work.

Coastal put the first runs of the game on the board in the bottom half of the first on a Tyler Hasbrouck two-run double to left center scoring Mike Costanzo and Brandon Powell.

The Chants blew the game open in the third posting six runs in the frame on the help of two Bulldog errors. Powell drove in the first run on a double down the left field line, scoring Ryan McGraw, who led off the inning with a bunt. McGraw would then score the second run on a groundout to second by Costanzo. Hasbrouck would drive in his third run of the evening on a single to center scoring Powell from third. Chad Oxendine also would drive in two more runs on his single to right field. Then Adam Pernasilici would drive in the final run with his single to left field.

Coastal would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, to push its lead to 11-0. Hasbrouck would cap off the inning with his second double of the game that scored Brett Grandstrand who reached base on a single.

The Citadel got on the board in the seventh inning when Chip Cannon connected on his fifth home run of the season, with a shot off the scoreboard in right field.

The Bulldogs would make the game interesting scoring three runs in the eighth inning. Matt Matulia would drive in the first run on a double to left center, scoring Trent Weathers who led off the inning with a single. Ken Egelton would drive in the other two runs on a triple to right field.

Hasbrouck led the Chants offensively with three hits and also driving in four runs. Powell and McGraw also added two hits each. The Citadel was led by Matulia who had a pair of hits along with two RBI.

Games two and three of this three-game will take place at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
