CONWAY, S.C. The 15th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (25-3, 4-0 Big South) pounded out a season high 18 hits and senior Andy DeLaGarza (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) had another quality start on the mound as the Chanticleers defeated Charleston Southern (13-19, 0-4 Big South) 10-4 March 30 in Conway, S.C. With the win, Coastal has now won 13 games in a row for the first time since the 1990 season.
Charleston Southern struck first with two outs in the first. Stephen Herzog doubled off the wall in left and scored on a single from Anthony Hayes. Coastal answered with two runs in the first. Sophomore David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) singled to open the inning. He went to second on senior Dom Duggans (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) 15th sacrifice of the season. Senior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Sophomore David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) singled home Sappelt and junior Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) brought in Raber on a sacrifice fly.
Sappelt led off the third with his third home run of the season. Raber walked and stole second with two outs. Anderson brought him home with a single to right center, making it 4-1 Coastal. In the top of the fourth, Charleston Southerns Chris Krogmeier reached on an error and scored on a double from Mark Perry. Coastal got that run back in the bottom of the frame as Rabers sacrifice fly brought in sophomore Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).
The score remained 5-2 until the seventh. Baldridge singled to start the frame and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He came in on junior Derek Martins (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) single. Senior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) doubled in Martin to make it 7-2 Coastal. Charleston Southern added a run in the eighth on a double from David Perkins that scored Hayes.
Coastal broke it open in the eighth, scoring three runs. Raber tripled to open the inning. Anderson brought him in with his third RBI of the game. Baldirdge and Rademacher both had bunt singles to load the bases and Martin scored Anderson with a single to left. Freshman Eric Godsy (Edmond, Okla./North) hit a sacrifice fly to score Baldridge, making it 10-3 Coastal. Charelston Southern scored a run in the ninth on Wes Brundridges single, but the Chants would escape without further damage for the 13th straight win.
DeLaGarza earned his seventh win of the season, pitcing 7.2 innings and allowing six hits, two earned run and six strikeouts while not allowing a walk. Senior Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./James Madison) pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing four hits and a run while striking out three. Ryan Rowland took the loss for Charleston Southern. He went 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs.
Sappelt and Baldridge had four hits apiece. Sappelt was a triple away from the cycle, the third time this season he has been one hit away. Anderson was 3-for-5 while Martin had two hits and two RBI. For CSU, Brundridge and Hayes had two hits apiece.
Coastal and Charleston Southern will play Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m., in Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
