CONWAY, SC Coastal Carolina put together 13 hits en route to a 10-4 victory over Radford in Big South Conference action, Saturday afternoon at Watson Stadium. Coastal improves to 22-6, 1-1 in the Big South, while Radford falls to 5-12, 1-4 in the Big South.
Steven Carter (5-1) hurled a complete game, allowing only two earned runs, while striking out seven, to help lead Coastal to its first Big South win of the season. Josh Deaver (1-2) suffered the loss for the Highlanders.
Coastal opened up the scoring with a pair runs in the bottom of the first. Jeff Baker would drive in the first run on a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Brett Grandstrand who reached base on a walk. Mike Costanzo would drive in the next run on a single to right, scoring Brandon Powell. Radford would answer with a run of its own in the second, when Mark Fleisher led off the inning with a home run to left field making the score, 2-1. CCU would add a run in the second and third innings to increase its lead to 4-1. The Chants would then bust the game open in the fifth, scoring four times to push the lead up to 8-1. Costanzo would drive in a pair of runs on a single to right, while Steve Pinocchio would drive in two more on a double to left field.
Powell went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, while Grandstrand and Costanzo each collected two hit a piece for the Chanticleers. Alan Ashworth had two hits and a RBI to lead the Highlanders offensively.
Game three of this three-game Big South Conference series will take place Sunday at 1 p.m.
