CONWAY, SC Radford's Justin Tubb pitched eight innings, giving up one run, while striking out three, to lead the Highlanders to a 4-1 victory over Coastal Carolina, Friday evening at Watson Stadium. Radford improves to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the Big South, while Coastal falls to 21-6 overall, 0-1 in the Big South.
Coastal scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the first on a solo home run to right field by Chanticleer leadoff hitter Ryan McGraw.
Radford got on the board with a pair of runs in the third inning. Mike Trabox drove in the first run on a single to right field to bring in Alan Ashworth. Ryan Wetzel would then score the second run on a fielder's choice by Scott Gvozdas.
The Highlanders would add a unearned run in the fourth, when Stuart Richie singled in Kellen Wohlford from third, who reached base one batter earlier on a throwing error by Coastal's Mike Costanzo. Wohlford would score another unearned run for Radford in the sixth on a fielder's choice at first. Wohlford, who led off the inning with a walk, stole second, then advanced to third on the throwing error by CCU catcher Chad Oxendine.
Ritchie, Ashworth and Mark Fleisher paced Radford offensively with two hits each, while Coastal was led by Brett Grandstrand who went 3-for-5.
Game two of this three-game Big South Conference series will take place Saturday. The game time has been moved up to 2 p.m., due to the treat of incoming rain forcasted for the area on Saturday.
