CONWAY, SC Senior pitcher Justin Sturge scattered four hits in eight innings of work, while striking out a career-high 11 batters as Coastal Carolina defeated Brown, 6-1, Tuesday evening at Charles Watson Stadium. Coastal improves to 20-5 on the season, while Brown falls to 2-10-1.
Sturge (5-0), who picked up the win, has won his last five starts. Joel DeMaria (0-2) suffered the loss for Brown who lost its third straight.
Coastal broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The inning was capped off by a two-run single by junior Ryan McGraw.
Jeff Nichols would drive in Brown's lone run of the game on a sacrifice-fly driving home Mark Kutler, who singled earlier in the inning. Coastal would answer with one run of its own in the bottom half of the inning on a McGraw double down the left field line.
For Coastal, Brandon Powell went 3-of-4 with two doubles, while Steve Pinocchio also had three and three runs scored. McGraw finished the night going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
The final game of the two-game series with Brown will take place Wednesday at 5 p.m., an hour earlier then previously listed.
