Baseball Falls to Winthrop 7-2 in Big South Series Finale
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Eddie Tisdale went 4-for-4 with four RBI and Winthrop (14-7, 5-1 Big South) took advantage of two Coastal Carolina (18-4, 3-2 Big South) errors to score four unearned runs in a 7-2 Eagle victory over the Chanticleers March 22 in the finale of a three-game Big South series in Rock Hill, S.C. Coastal Carolina loses a Big South series for the first time since April 22-24, 2006 and has now dropped three of its last four games.
The Chants got out of a big jam in the first. After redshirt junior Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) retired the Eagles’ first two batters on ground outs, he gave up back-to-back hits to Cam Walters and Eddie Rohan. Fleet walked Eddie Tisdale to load the bases, but came back to strike out John Murrian to end the inning.
Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) then did what he did in Saturday’s game, leading off the second inning with a home run. This time is was a shot to the gap in right field, his seventh of the season.
The Chanticleers added a run in the fifth. Redshirt sophomore Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) then had a great bunt past first baseman Eddie Tisdale for a single. Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) then tried to sacrifice both runners over, but bunted into a fielder’s choice. Sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) then came up big with a single up the middle, scoring Motter and giving the Chants a 2-0 lead.
Winthrop would take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Thielepape walked to open the inning. After a fly out to Bryn Henderson, Kevin Nolan singled to left field. Fleet would strike out Cam Walters, but Rohan would reach on an error from Anderson to load the bases. Tisdale then hit a two-run double to left off sophomore Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek) to tie the game at two. Freshman TJ Swank (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) came in and walked Aaron Bonomi with the bases loaded to give the Eagles the 3-2 lead.
Tisdale hurt the Chants again in the sixth, as he drove in a pair with a bases-loaded single through the right side, scoring Nolan and Walters. Coastal Carolina had the first two runners reach in the eighth, but Winthrop closer Tyler Mizenko struck out Anderson, got freshman Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville) to ground out and junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) to fly out to end the threat.
Winthrop added insurance with two runs in the eighth. Bryn Henderson reached on an infield single, stole second and then scored on back-to-back wild pitches from freshman Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West). Winthrop made it 7-2 when Walters walked, stole second, reached third on a wild pitch and scored as Woodward’s throw to first to get Rohan out was low.
Walters added three hits for Winthrop. Six Chanticleers had a hit apiece.
The win went to Robert Lake, who struck out seven in seven innings of work. Mizenko picked up his fifth save, striking out two in two innings of work. Fleet was tagged with the loss, as he gave up three unearned runs and five hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Coastal Carolina will travel to the Aloha State for a four-game series with the University of Hawai’i. The first games is scheduled for Thursday, March 26 at 6:35 p.m. HST (12:35 a.m. on Friday EDT).
