Baseball’s Anthony Simonelli Named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina freshman Anthony Simonelli was voted the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week by the league’s head baseball coaches, it was announced today.

Simonelli got the win last Wednesday in his collegiate debut at the College of Charleston. The leftty pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Not only was it Simonelli’s collegiate debut, it marked his first pitching appearance since his junior year of high school in 2016 as he missed 2017 due to Tommy John surgery.

Simonelli shut down College Charleston in the 13-0 CCU win. He did not allow a hit until one out in the fifth inning and used just 42 pitches to that point. Overall, he only used 68 pitches in his 7.0 innings.

Coastal Carolina plays UNC Wilmington today (Feb. 28) and Simonelli is slated to start versus the Seahawks.

The Chanticleers will host the Johnny Gardner Law Group Tournament this weekend (Mar. 2-4). Coastal will face Ball State Friday (4 pm), Maryland Saturday (3 pm) and Radford Sunday (3 pm).
