CONWAY - The Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach annually brings some of the nation's top teams and talent from around the country but this 14th edition of the event may be its best.

The tournament gets underway Thursday (Feb. 28) with Coastal Carolina hosting San Diego and will then see three games per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with first pitch set for 10 am each day. Coastal will face Florida Atlantic Friday at 5 pm, Indiana Saturday at 1:30 pm and #10 North Carolina State Sunday at 5 pm. Also participating in the Baseball at the Beach are West Virginia and UMBC.

These games are not part of the CCU season ticket package and all tickets must be purchased through the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Ticket Office. Cost for the event is $10 per day or $25 for the weekend. CCU students may gain admission for $5.

While Coastal Carolina is coming off a 1-3 week, the Chanticleers (3-3) faced two top 10 teams - #1 North Carolina and #8 Kentucky - and pitcher junior Tyler Herb was named Big South Pitcher of the Week for his eight-inning performance in a win over Kansas State.

San Diego was ranked nationally in the preseason and features preseason first team All-American Kris Bryant. The designated hitter is projected to be an overall top 15 draft pick this season.

Florida Atlantic is the defending Bun Belt Conference regular-season champion and features Jeremy Stramn, who is the reigning Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week after pitching eight shutout innings in a 3-0 win over Alabama. Like Coastal, FAU opened the season versus stiff competition, recording a 5-4 loss to #20 Miami in 11 innings in the season opener while defeating #22 Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday.

Indiana is the consensus preseason favorite to win the Big 10 and features Sam Travis, who was tabbed preseason Big 10 Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball.

North Carolina State is currently ranked 10th by Baseball America and was the preseason favorite to win the ACC by the league's coaches. The Wolfpack has two preseason first team All-Americans in pitcher Carlos Rodon and shortstop Trea Turner. Rodon, the first freshman to be named ACC Pitcher and Player of the Year in 2012, is considered one of the best pitchers in college baseball after posting a 1.57 ERA, the fourth best in the nation, and 135 strikeouts, third-best in the NCAA. After a rough start the opening weekend, Rodon is a reigning National Pitcher of the Week as he struck out 14 over seven innings and teamed with Karl Keglovits to no-hit La Salle this past weekend. Turner led the nation with 57 stolen bases last season.
