Marrie Throws Rain-Shortened No-Hitter in Baseball's 14-0 Win over Rider

More Information:

Sophomore Kevin Marrie (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) threw a five-inning, rain-shortened no-hitter as the Coastal Carolina University baseball team (7-1) defeated Rider University (0-4) 14-0 Feb. 27 in game six of the IMIChotels.com INN-vitational at Charles Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.  It was Coastal's seventh straight victory.

Marrie struck out seven Broncs in five innings, allowing no hits or runs. It was the first thrown no-hitter in head coach Gary Gilmore’s 10-year tenure at Coastal.

The Chanticleers had another big inning against Rider, sending 16 to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, the Chants scored the first run of the inning on a wild pickoff throw to second and a misplay at center field, scoring junior Adam Pernasilici (Tecumseh, Ontario/St. Anne’s). After a walk to senior Chris Todd (Seattle, Wash./Bellevue C.C.), junior Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) drove in two on a double to left. Junior Michael DeJesus (Manapalan, N.J./East Carolina) stepped to the plate and blasted his second home run of the weekend over the right field wall. Senior Jon Foisy (Ridgecrest, Calif./Cerro Coso C.C.) was hit by a pitch and junior Aaron Verrett (Jupiter, Fla./Polk C.C.) singled, setting up Pernasilici’s three-run bomb to left, his first of the year. After a walk to sophomore Josh Eachues (Newberry, S.C./Newberry), Coastal had three straight doubles from sophomore Danny Morgan (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian), sophomore Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) and freshman Keon Graves (Dillon, S.C./Dillon) that made it 14-0 Coastal.

Coastal scored one in the second on a run batted in single from junior Kevin Entsminger (Canton, Mich./College of the Siskiyous) and two in the third on two straight RBI groundouts.

After the Rider fifth, the game was called due to rain that was getting heavier by the minute.

Pernasilici, Entsminger and Duggan had two hits apiece, while DeJesus drove in three. On the weekend, DeJesus went 6-for-11 with 11 runs batted in.

The loss fell to Erik Holck, who gave up seven hits and 10 runs in 3.2 innings.

Coastal enjoyed a 4-0 weekend, defeating Pittsburgh and Rider twice. The Coastal pitching staff had a 3.09 earned run average and CCU batted around three times in four games.

In the first game of the day, Pittsburgh defeated Rider 6-4.

Coastal hosts The Citadel Wednesday, March 2, at 4 p.m., at Charles Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
