DURHAM, N.C. -- Coastal Carolina University baseball juniors Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) and Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) are two of 50 players that have been named to the 2010 Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List, announced by USA Baseball Feb. 18.
Coastal Carolina is one of 11 teams with two or more players on the list. The watch list features 50 of the nation’s top amateur talents, and it will be a “rolling” list to ensure that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the Golden Spikes Award, to be presented live on Tuesday, July 13, at the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Anaheim, Calif.
Wheeler, a lefthanded pitcher who was named the Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year in January, was 10-1 with a 3.83 earned-run average in 15 starts last season for the Chanticleers. The Big South Pitcher of the Year struck out a team and conference-high 98 batters in 91.2 innings pitched. Wheeler pitched a complete-game no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Hawai’i March 26 and had seven-inning, one-hit performances in wins over Stony Brook and VMI. He was named a Louisville Slugger Second Team All-American and an All-Ping! Baseball Third Team All-American at the end of 2009. Wheeler was 7-0 in Big South games and has 63 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched in conference matchups. He was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week three times last year. The Chanticleer opponents hit just .222 off Wheeler. For his career, Wheeler is 16-1 with 163 strikeouts in 157.1 innings pitched.
Woodward, an infielder/outfielder, has a .334 batting average with 19 doubles and 72 stolen bases in his Coastal Carolina career. Last season, Woodward hit .284 and had 30 stolen bases despite missing 22 games to injury. He had a .445 on-base percentage and a .351 slugging percentage and had back-to-back three-hit games at Hawai'i March 26-27. Woodward drove in two runs in the Big South Tournament championship game against Winthrop and had 11 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI performances in 2009.
Wheeler and Woodward both played on Team USA in the past two seasons. Woodward was on the squad in 2008, while Wheeler pitched for the team in 2009.
On Tuesday, June 1, USA Baseball officials will cut the watch list of players to 30 names. The final list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of select professional baseball personnel, past USA Baseball National Team coaches, select members of the media, former USA Baseball sports information directors, and current USA Baseball staff - close to 150 voters in total.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2010. June 1 will also mark the day when college baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player for the Golden Spikes Award on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process all voters will be asked to choose five players from the list of 30 names. On Tuesday, June 8, USA Baseball will announce the five finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.
Coastal Carolina opens the 2010 season Friday, Feb. 19, hosting the Caravelle Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. The Chants face West Virginia Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.
