CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina baseball team will open its 2011 schedule this weekend, hosting the Caravelle Resort Tournament Feb. 18-20 and welcoming Boston College, Indiana, Tennessee Tech and Virginia Tech.
While the weather this January and February has not been typical for the Grand Strand, the weekend will be perfect.
"To play here, in front of our crowd, will be a huge for our team," said head coach Gary Gilmore. "I know last year we sold out the first four or five times we played here. The forecasts are calling for 70-degree days and I expect this place to be rocking."
The Chanticleers will host ACC member Boston College in their opener, which is set to start at 4 pm at Watson Stadium on Friday (Feb. 18). The Eagles were 30-28 last season and return leading hitter Anthony Melchionda, who batted .358 last season.
On Saturday at 3 pm, the Chants' will host defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Tennessee Tech and its preseason All-American outfielder Chad Oberacker, who finished last season ranked no. 3 in the nation with a batting average of .452. Prior to the game Saturday, the Department of Athletics will honor the 2010 record-setting team by presenting the players and coaches with their championship rings.
Coastal will host a double header on Sunday. First, the Chants will host Indiana, who returns Alex Dickerson. The outfielder batted a robust .419 last season with 24 home runs and 75 RBI, winning the Big Ten "Triple Crown." Immediately afterward, Coastal will host ACC foe Virginia Tech. The Hokies finished 2010 with a record of 40-22 and were defeated in the by South Carolina after winning two games in the Columbia Regional.
"Opening weekend teams bring a lot of emotion, adrenaline and energy," Gilmore said. "Every team that is here will be ecstatic to play. This weekend is going to be unbelievable. Just like Major League Baseball, every team opens the season wanting and thinking they can go to the World Series. Our guys will no different."
