MYRTLE BEACH - The Coastal Carolina baseball coaches and student-athletes conducted their annual free clinic Monday, instructing approximately 180 6- to 12-year-olds at St. James, Carolina Forest and Myrtle Beach high schools. The three-hour camp, made possible with help from the Mike Pruitt Foundation for the Advancement of Youth Baseball in Horry County, focused on hitting, base running, fielding and throwing fundamentals.

Today's camp was the first of three annual events that signify the start of the Chanticleer baseball season. The second event is the official first day of practice, which is set for this Friday (Jan. 25). The final event is the sixth annual Step Up to the Plate Dinner, set for Jan. 31.

"We hope these annual camps, as well as those that Mike Pruitt's Foundation helps in the summer,  are positive ways to promote baseball in Horry County," said CCU head coach Gary Gilmore. "We want to expose young kids to fun day at the ballpark and hopefully they will want to stay in baseball."

The Step Up to the Plate Dinner and silent auction on Jan. 31 will benefit Mike Pruitt's Foundation as well as the Grand Strand Miracle League. Both organizations promote and provide assistance to children in Horry County who want to play baseball.

The event will be held at the Chesapeake House and begins at 6 pm with a social. The silent auction will run from 6-8 pm and the dinner is set from 7-9 pm. Cost is $125 per person or $200 per couple. For more information or for reservations, contact Chris Carter at 843-349-2524 or ccarter@coastal.edu.

"This community has been so good to me and our program, I want to do all I can to make a difference, give back and make it possible for everyone to enjoy the great game of baseball," Gilmore said. "This dinner goes a long way in achieving that as kids who would not be able to attend camps can for free and we can buy equipment for the Miracle League to make their experience as enjoyable as possible."

Coastal Carolina will open the 2013 season on Feb. 15, hosting James Madison at Francis Marion's Sparrow Stadium. The weekend series versus James Madison (Feb. 16-17) will conclude at Coastal's 2013 home for baseball, TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach. The following week the Chants will host Elon, Kentucky, Kansas State and Marshall in the Caravelle Resort Tournament, the first of four consecutive weekend tournaments Coastal will host.
