Final Stats

ROCK HILL - Coastal Carolina senior Matt Rein threw a complete game shutout, the first of the year by a Chanticleer, to lead the 24th-ranked Chanticleers (34-17, 18-6 Big South) to a 5-0 victory at Winthrop (25-27, 13-11) Sunday afternoon. Rein improves to 8-2 on the year, lowers his season ERA to 1.41 and has a consecutive scoreless innings streak of 20.1 innings, spanning four games.

On Sunday, Rein only allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four.

Rein's scoreless innings streak began in a loss at High Point April 23. After giving up a one-out, three-run home run, Rein has not allowed a run over 20.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and four walks with nine strike outs.

Offensively, the Chants were led by Tommy La Stella (3-for-4 with an RBI), Rich Witten (2-for-5 with an RBI) and Daniel Bowman (3-for-5 with two RBI).

Coastal got on the board first. Taylor Motter doubled down the left field line and scored one batter later as Tucker Frawley singled to left.

The Chants used the same formula to score in the third. With one out, Witten doubled to right-center field and scored on La Stella's second hit of the game. (La Stella now has an 11-game hit streak.) Bowman followed wit a double of his own, plating La Stella from first for a 3-0 advantage.

Coastal once again used a double, single combination to score in the top of the seventh and take a 4-0 lead. Tripp Martin lined a ball down the left field line and scored on Witten's RBI single up the middle.

The Chants added one in the top of the ninth to make the score 5-0. Martin drew a leadoff walk and, after a sacrifice bunt and strike out, La Stella was intentionally walked. Bowman made the Eagles pay with an RBI single to center.

Winthrop starter Matteo D'Angelo (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing nine hits and four runs with a strike out over seven innings. Adam Gliebe in the second, Tyler Cook in the third and Cam Walters in the ninth were the only hits Rein would allow.

Coastal Carolina will close the 2011 regular season with four consecutive home games, starting Tuesday (May 17) with UNC Wilmington. Game time is set for 6 pm.

The final regular-season series of 2011 will be versus Charleston Southern and be played on Thursday (May 19 at 6 pm), Friday (May 20 at 6 pm) and Saturday (May 21 at 2 pm).

NOTES: The win for Coastal was the 899th in this Gary Gilmore's 22nd year as a collegiate coach. He is now 899-422-2, including a 643-320 mark in his 16th year CCU and 256-102-2 in six year at USC Aiken.

Rein's breakdown of his 20.1 scoreless innings streak is as follows: 0.2 innings with a K at High Point; 5.2 innings in a start and win over VMI allowing five hits and one walk with two strike outs; 5.0 innings in a start and win over Radford allowing three hits and two walks with two strike outs; and 9.0 innings in a start and win at Winthrop allowing three hits and one walk with four strike outs.

Rein not only marks the first CCU complete-game shutout of 2011, but the first since Cody Wheeler threw a complete-game shutout over Stony Brook in the 2010 Myrtle Beach Regional (May 4, 2010).
