CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coastal Carolina out-hit North Carolina, 10-9, but the 27th-ranked Chanticleers (24-13) could not overcome a seven-run fifth by the 10th-ranked Tar Heels (31-8) en route to an 8-3 loss Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium.

Scott Woodward, who was 2-for-4 with a walk, drove in all three runs for Coastal Carolina while Tommy La Stella inched closed to the .400 plateau, going 3-for-4 and raising his batting average to .398.

Coastal threatened in the first loading the bases thanks to two out hits from La Stella and Daniel Bowman, who extended his hit streak to 10 games, with a Rich Witten walk. UNC starter Andrew Smith escaped unscathed by getting a strike out.

The Chants broke through in the second. Tucker Frawley singled, but was retired on K.J. McAllister's fielder's choice. Jacob May followed with a single with he and McAllister moving to second and third, respectively, on an error. Woodward brought the two home with a two-run single.

The Tar Heels took a commanding 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, sending 10 men to the plate but getting just four hits. The Tar Heels loaded the bases to start the bottom of the fifth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Jacob Stallings and Greg Holt. Matt Roberts followed with a walk to chase CCU starter Keith Hessler. Stefan del Pino came on to walk Tommy Coyle, plating one run, then hit Chaz Frank to tie the game and keep the bases loaded. Levi Michael walked, making the score 3-2 and forcing Coastal to turn to Tyler Herb. Colin Moran delivered a three-run double to center and Jesse Wierzbicki singled to put runners on the corners. Herb would get a ground ball double play, but Moran would score, putting UNC on top 7-2.

North Carolina added to its advantage in the the sixth, scoring once. Roberts had a one-out single and Coyle reached on a fielder's choice. Frank put runners on first and third with a single and Michael followed with an RBI single to center.

Coastal got that run back in the top of the seventh, making the score 8-3. Pinch hitter Tripp Martin doubled and scored on Woodward's single up the middle.

Hessler (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four hits and three runs over four innings with two walks and a strike out. Kent Emmanuel (5-1) got the win, scattering four hits with one run and four strike outs in three innings.
