CLINTON - Tommy La Stella accounted for four runs, going 2-for-2 with a home run, to lead Coastal Carolina to a 5-2 win at Presbyterian Sunday, giving the Chanticleers (21-11, 7-2 Big South) a weekend sweep over the Blue Hose (18-15, 4-8).
La Stella, who was walked and hit by a pitch to score three times, had an RBI single in the third and solo home run in the ninth. Hayes Orton and Keith Hardwich each added two hits, while Daniel Bowman drove in two.
The Chants used six pitchers with Jordan Coons (2-3) getting the win and Josh Conway moving from left field to pitch the final two innings and earn his second save of the season. Coons pitched the fourth and fifth innings, allowing two hits a walk and striking out two. Conway allowed two hits, both in the ninth, and struck out two for the save.
Coastal used three singles and sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Scott Woodward had a lead-off single and Hayes Orton followed with a bunt single. After a Tommy La Stella sac bunt, Daniel Bowman delivered an RBI single to right field.
In the third, Coastal extended its lead to 3-0. Orton started the frame with a double and scored on La Stella's single to center. On the single, the ball got by the center fielder, putting La Stella on third. Bowman drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center. The Blue Hose trimmed its deficit to two in the home half of the third. Andrew Williams and Brad Zebedis drew walks and Tony Micklon singled to center to plate Williams. A third walk would load the bases, but Jim Birmingham got a ground out to end the threat.
Birmingham left after three complete innings. He only allowed two hits and one runs, but walked five.
The Blue Hose mounted another threat in the fourth. After two quick strike outs, Williams doubled, Mack Hite walked and Zebedis was hit by a pitch. Coons fell behind 3-0, but worked the count full and got Micklon to ground out to escape unscathed.
In the top of the fifth, La Stella drew a lead-off walk and stole second. With two outs, Hardwick doubled down the left field line to bring home La Stella and make the score 4-1.
PC got that run back in the bottom of the sixth. Williams came through with a one-out triple and scored on Hite's RBI ground out to second.
La Stella started the ninth with a home run to right, his eighth dinger of the season, to provide the final score of 5-2.
For Presbyterian, Williams led the way, going 3-for-4 and scoring both Blue Hose runs. Brandon Paul added two hits. PC starter Brandon Pace (2-4) suffered the loss, going 6.1 innings. He allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned) with two walks and a strike out.
Coastal Carolina will stay on the road to face #2 Virginia this Wednesday, April 13.
