CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Michael Paez accounted for all three of Coastal Carolina's runs as the Chanticleers (15-19) rallied to claim a 3-2 win in 11 innings at #29 North Carolina (19-14) Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Coastal executed a squeeze bunt in the ninth inning to tie the game and again in the 11th to score the winning run.
Paez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. On the mound, five CCU pitchers combined to throw 10.1 scoreless innings after allowing a two-run home run in the first.
With one out in the 11th inning, Paez was hit by a pitch. Tyler Chadwick was given a second-life at the plate as his pop up foul was dropped by the third baseman. On the next pitch, Chadwick lined a single to right field, allowing Paez to take third. Zack Remillard laid down a safety squeeze and the Tar Heels were not able to get Paez at the plate to give the Chanticleers the 3-2 lead.
Tyler Poole, who worked the last three innings, worked a perfect 11th inning with two strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 1-2 on the season.
In the bottom of the first, Skye Bolt hit a two-out single and Korey Dunbar followed with a two-run home run to left field for an early 2-0 lead.
Coastal loaded the bases in the sixth thanks to a pair of walks and a Tar Heel error. Paez and Chadwick started the frame with back-to-back walks. Remillard loaded the bases after laying down a sacrifice bunt but reached on a throwing error. G.K. Young lined out to right field but Paez was still able to score on the sacrifice fly to cut the CCU deficit in half, 2-1.
The Chanticleers nearly tied the game in the seventh. Nick Oberg drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a Steven Whitaker sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Paez singled to center. Oberg tried to score on the play, but Bolt's throw beat him to the plate to keep UNC on top 2-1.
Coastal tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the ninth. Pinch hitter Anthony Marks drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Connor Owings followed with an infield single, moving Marks to third. Paez executed a safety squeeze, bringing home Marks for the tying run.
Chadwick was intentionally walked in the ninth inning as he tied a CCU single-game record with five walks in a contest.
Dalton Moats pitched the first four innings and allowed the two-run home run and one walk. Cole Schaefer pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. Brock Hunter and Andrew Beckwith each pitched two-thirds of an inning to set the stage for Poole.
Spencer Trayner (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing one run and one hit in 1.2 innings.
Coastal Carolina stays on the road to face Big South foe Radford April 11-13.
