Coastal Carolina Baseball Sweeps Liberty with 12-1 Win

MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina scored six runs in the first inning and CCU starter Alex Cunningham pitched 4.1 innings before allowing his first hit in a 12-1 win over Liberty Monday afternoon at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
The Chanticleers improve to 20-12 overall and 7-2 in the Big South. In completing the series sweep Monday. Coastal has now defeated the Flames (17-15, 6-6) in 20 consecutive meeting. Coastal Carolina has also won five straight overall, 13 of its last 13 and 16 of its last 20 after starting the season 4-8.
Coastal pounded out 13 hits and drew 10 walks to score a season-high 12 runs. Tyler Chadwick and Zach Remillard each went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI each to lead the Chanticleer offense. Also, Justin Creel was 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored three times while Chris Suseck came off the bench to go 2-for-2.
While the offense was having success, Cunningham (2-1) was just as impressive. The freshman was lifted after five scoreless innings and CCU leading 10-0. The Duncan native allowed just one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.
Coastal made it three-for-three in taking a lead in the first inning, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six runs. Ted Blackman, who walked to start game one and singled to start game two, tripled to start Monday's game. Jacob May followed with an RBI single to center field. Alex Buccilli followed with a single. May was retired on a sacrifice bunt attempt but Colin Hering walked to load the bases. Creel followed with an RBI walk to force home Buccilli and chase Liberty starter Trey Lambert. Chadwick welcomed relief pitcher Josh Richardson with an RBI single, keeping the bases loaded. Z. Remillard followed with an RBI single. Creel scored the fifth run on a Liberty wild pitch. After a strikeout, Chadwick scored on the second wild pitch of the inning.
Coastal extended its lead to 7-0 in the second inning. May walked and Buccilli followed with a hit-and-run single to start the home half to put runners on the corners. Will Remillard plated May with a sacrifice fly to center field.
With two outs in the fourth, Hering, Creel, Chadwick and Z. Remillard reeled off consecutive singles, the last two being run producers. Chadwick would later score on a wild pitch to give Coastal a 10-0 lead.
Liberty broke through with a run in the sixth. Ashton Perritt singled, went to third on Bryan Aanderud's single and scored when Trey Wimmer hit into a double play.
Coastal got that run back and added another in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-1 cushion. Creel walked to start the home half and Josh Powell and Suseck followed with singles to load the bases. Brian Pruett walked to force home a run. Two batters later, Luke Willis plated Powell with an RBI ground out.
Liberty used eight pitchers in the series finale. Starter Trey Lambert (5-1) suffered the loss. He lasted only one-third of an inning, allowing three hits, five runs and two walks.
