Coastal Carolina Wins 7-1 at Presbyterian Friday

CLINTON - Anthony Meo pitched a season-high 8.1 innings and Tommy La Stella had three hits with four RBI to lead Coastal Carolina (19-11, 5-2 Big South) to a 7-1 win Friday afternoon at Presbyterian (18-11, 4-6) in the opening game of the three-game weekend series at PC Baseball Complex.
Meo (4-2) also pitched the second-longest outing of his career. (Meo pitched 8.2 innings in Big South play, Meo improves to 16-2, winning 13 straight, with a 1.95 ERA.
The Blue Hose to an early 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Andrew Williams looped a single to center and the next two batters walked to load the bases. Cleanup hitter Kenny Bryant grounded into a double play, allowing Williams to score. Meo got another ground out to limit the damage. In the second, Meo had to get four outs as leadoff hitter Nate Horton struck out but reached on a passed ball. After a walk and sacrifice bunt, PC had runners on second and third. Meo rose to the occasion again, getting a strike out and ground out to keep the score 1-0.
From that point, Meo settled down to retired 17 of the next 21 batters faced to earn the win. During the span, Meo induced eight ground balls, including a double play, and La Stella tied a career high with six assists.
While Meo was getting hot on the mound, the Chanticleer offense did as well. In the third inning, Coastal scored four runs for a 4-1 lead. Frawley started things with a single and, on a hit-and-run, Rich Witten reach on a fielding error. Conway laid down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Scott Woodward brought home Frawley with a sacrifice fly to left field. Hayes Orton walked to re-load the bases and La Stella snapped an 0-for-9 streak at the plate with a two-run single, moving Orton to third on the play. Daniel Bowman capped the inning with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Chants took advantage of another PC error in the fourth as Keith Harwick reached on a miscue by the shortstop. After a sacrifice bunt, Witten walked and Conway delivered an RBI single to left for a 5-1 CCU advantage.
Neither team scored over the next four innings. However, in the top of the ninth Orton started the frame with a bunt single and La Stella hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run, opposite field blast over the left-field fence.
Tyler Herb came out of the bullpen for Coastal to record the final two outs, both strike outs while allowing a hit in between.
PC starter Buck Mosteller (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing nine hits and five runs (three earned) with four walks and three strike outs.
The teams will meet Saturday at 2 pm for game two of the series.
