COLUMBIA - Marcus Mooney's two-run double in the second inning proved to be enough to lead second-ranked South Carolina to a 4-0 decision over Coastal Carolina Wednesday night at Carolina Stadium.
The Chanticleers will return home to host a three=game series with conference foe Charleston Southern March 28-30. Game times are set for 6 pm Friday, 3 pm Saturday and 2 pm Sunday.
In the second inning, Brison Celek drew a leadoff walk and DC Arendas followed with a single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt, Mooney lined a two-run double down the third base line.
The Gamecocks extended their lead to 3-0 with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Connor Bright walked, stole second and scored on Celek's RBI double that ricocheted off third base down the left field line.
Coastal threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs before Curt Britt (1-0) recorded a strikeout to escape unscathed.
South Carolina then manufactured a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kyle Martin hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on a pair of ground outs. Arendas squibbed a slow roller to shortstop, which was good enough for a single and allowed Martin to score provide the 4-0 final.
Despite the loss, three Chanticleer pitchers had solid outings. Dalton Moats (0-3) was saddled with the loss. The freshman, who had not pitched since March 9, allowed five hits and three runs in his three innings. Andrew Beckwith allowed two hits and one run in his 3.1 innings and Austin Kerr pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.
