SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State scored five runs in the seventh inning to post a 10-7, come-from-behind win over #20 Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon to win the series Sun Belt opener for both squads. The game spoiled an excellent afternoon for Seth Lancaster. The junior, who has reached base in each of in each of his last five at bats with three home runs, was 3-for-3 Sunday with two homeruns, three runs scored and four RBI.
Texas State once again struck first, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jason Ortega lined a one-out single and moved to third on a double to center field by Ryan Newman. Then, with outs and two strikes, Jaylen Hubbard delivered a two-run single to center field.
Coastal got one of those runs back in the top of the second. Lancaster, who hit s game-winning home run in his last at bat on Saturday, left the yard in his first at bat Sunday, clearing the right-center field wall for his third round-tripper of the season.
However, the Bobcats answered in the home half of the third. Luke Sherley singled and Travon Benton walked. The pair moved up 90 feet on a deep fly ball to center field. Jacob Alemdarez brought home Sherley with an RBI ground out to first base.
The Chants wrestled the lead from the Bobcats with three runs in the fifth. Wood Myers had a leadoff single, Lancaster walked and Cory Wood laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Dalton Ewing continued his hit hitting by flaring a single to left-center field to bring home Myers and keep the bases loaded. Matt Beaird followed with an RBI walk to force home Lancaster and tie the contest. Billy Cooke gave Coastal the 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Coastal’s lead was short lived as Ortega smacked a one-out home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. The Bobcats then put runners on first and second before Bobby Holmes came out of the bullpen to induce an inning-ending double play.
Lancaster came up big again in the sixth. Peyton Isaacson and Woodall started the frame with singles. After a sacrifice bunt, Lancaster welcomed new Texas State pitcher Broc Bosse by hitting a 3-2 pitch off the scoreboard in right field to put the Chants up 7-4.
Texas State batted around in the seventh and scored five runs to take a 9-7 lead. Derek Scheible hit a one-out double and Ryan Newman drew a two-out walk. A wild pitch put the runners on second and third. Theodore Hoffman made CCU pay by lining a two-run single to left field. After a walk, Sherley found a hole through the left side of the infield to score Newman and tie the contest. The Bobcats would load the bases before Jared Huber lined a two-run single to center to break the tie and give his team the two-run lead.
The Bobcats added an insurance run in the eighth. Singles by Ortega, Hoffman and Hubbard gave the home team a 10-7 cushion.
Zack Hopeck (1-2) suffered the loss as he allowed four hits and five hits in 1.2 innings of relief work. Brayden Theriot (1-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, with no walks and three strikeouts.
