HIGH POINT, N.C. - High Point scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to defeat Coastal Carolina, 3-0, Friday night in the opening game of the teams' Big South series opener at Willard Stadium.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast Sunday, Coastal Carolina and High Point will play a Saturday doubleheader with first pitch set for 3 pm.
High Point pitcher John McGillicuddy threw a one-hit shutout, allowing an infield single in the first inning, to improve to 2-1 on the season. He walked two and struck out two in the win.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard first, scoring twice in the second inning. Spencer Angelis drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Cody Manzella sacrifice bunt. Chris Clare followed with a double off the third base bag, plating Angelis. After an infield single put runners on the corners, Tony Fortier-Bensen hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Clare.
High Point manufactured a run in the third inning. Josh Greene led off with an infield single. He stole second and moved to third on a Josh Spano ground out. Dominic Fazio lifted a single over the drawn-in infield to drive in Greene.
In the eighth, Ben Smith (1-3) loaded the bases with no outs by allowing a double, single and walk. Coastal turned to Andrew Beckwith out of the bullpen. The freshman got a come-backer and threw out the lead runner at the plate. He then induced an inning-ending double play to escape unscathed.
However, McGillicuddy was just as impressive as he retired his last 14 batters faced.
