Baseball Drops Backend of Doubleheader versus High Point
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina scored two runs in the first inning, but that was all it could manage in suffering a 3-2 loss to High Point in the backend of a mixed doubleheader Sunday. The Chanticleers lost to Ohio State, 7-5, earlier Sunday in the final day of the Environmental Staffing Chanticleer Classic at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Coastal Carolina (12-6) will stay at home to host UConn on Tuesday with first pitch set for 4 pm. High Point improves to 8-7.
Coastal got off to a quick start versus Panthers as leadoff hitter Seth Lancaster doubled to start the home half of the first inning. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Woodall Jr., also singled and Zach Biermann walked to set the stage for an RBI single from Kyle Skeels for a 2-0 lead.
High Point cut its deficit in half, 2-1, in the second. Hunter Lee and Blake Schunk started the frame with singles and Jordan Sergent loaded the bases with a one-out single. JJ Woodard delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the Panthers' first run.
A solo home run by Tanner Wells to start the fourth knotted the game at 2-2.
The Panthers took a 3-2 lead in the eighth. Carson Jackson reached on a fielder's choice and scored one batter later when Blake Schunk doubled to right field.
Trevor Damron (0-1) suffered the loss. He allowed one hit and one run in 3.1 innings of relief. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Jay Causey got his first career start and struck out five in four innings.
