MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina freshman Cole Schaefer scattered four hits over seven innings and closer Tyler Poole worked the final two innings to complete a 3-0 shutout over UNC Greensboro in the final game of the Chanticleer Classic at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Chanticleers, winners of three straight, improve to 7-8 while the Spartans fall to 6-8.

Schaefer improves to 3-0 in three start and retired the first eight batters he faced. Poole has converted all four of his save opportunities and, despite walking his first batter of 2014 Monday, has yet to surrender a hit or a run in 7.1 innings this season with eight strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first inning, Coastal scratched the scoreboard as Michael Paez was hit by a pitch, took second on a ground out and scored on Zach Remillard's RBI single to left field.

The Spartans had their best chance to score in the sixth when L.J. Kalawaia had a leadoff single and moved to second on an error. However, Schaefer got Hunter King to line into a double play.

In the eighth inning, Coastal pushed two runs across the plate to provide the eventual 3-0 final score. Nick Oberg drew a leadoff walk and John McNulty then reached on an error. Richard Carter lined an RBI single to right field and Paez had a bunt single to cap the scoring.

Dylan Thompson (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing two hits and one run over his seven innings.

Coastal picked up just its third win in 13 meetings versus the Spartans. While this was the first meeting between former Big South foes since 1997, it snapped a nine-game losing streak by the Chants versus the Spartans.

Coastal Carolina will host Wake Forest Tuesday (March 11) at 4 pm.
