MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina sophomore Ben Smith struck out a career-high nine batters over a career-high 6.1 innings and Will Remillard drove in two to lead the Chanticleers (7-8) to a 3-1 victory over Ohio State (8-5) before a crowd of 1,257 Sunday afternoon at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

With the win, Chanticleer skipper Gary Gilmore won his 700th game as Coastal Carolina head coach to become the 23rd active coach in NCAA Division I to notch 700 wins at one school. Gilmore is now 700-350 in his 18th year (1996-present) at his alma mater. Overall, Gilmore is in his 24th year as a college coach and owns a 956-452-2 record. Gilmore began his head coaching career at USC Aiken and was 256-102-2 in six years (1990-95) there.

Smith (1-1) scattered four hits and walked two, both coming in the seventh inning. He struck out two Buckeyes in the second inning, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to post his career high of nine. His previous high was getting six strikeouts, which he accomplishes three times. Ryan Connolly worked the ninth inning, getting a double play and a pop out to earn his second save of the season.

Jacob May gave Coastal an early 1-0 lead, hitting a one-out solo home run down the left field line. The junior then gave Coastal a 2-0 lead in the sixth. He hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a Jake Kane's bunt single and scored on Remillard's sacrifice fly to center.

Ohio State cut its deficit in half, 2-1, in the eighth inning. Patrick Porter hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a ground out. With two away, pinch hitter Joe Ciamacco singled to left to plate Porter.

Coastal got that run back in the home half of the eighth. Ted Blackman drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on May's sacrifice bunt and scored on Remillard's single to center to provide the 3-1 final.

Ohio State starter Brian King (2-2) suffered the loss. He allowed eight hits and three runs with a walk and two strikeouts.

Coastal Carolina and Ohio State will meet again Monday at 4 pm to conclude the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
