CONWAY - Toledo scored one in the ninth inning and three in the 11th to complete a 10-7 come-from-behind win over host Coastal Carolina Friday night in the Chanticleer Classic. Earlier in the day, Ohio State defeated Marist, 17-2.
On Saturday, Coastal Carolina (6-5) will host Ohio State (7-4) at Noon and Marist (2-4) at 4 pm, while Ohio State will travel to Myrtle Beach to face Toledo (4-9) at 5 pm at BB&T Coastal Field.
Toledo tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the ninth. Matt Delewski drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. After an infield single, Joe Corfman plated Delewski with a sacrifice fly to center field. Corfman finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.
Coastal would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but a ground out ended the threat to force extra innings.
In the 11th, pinch hitter Andy Mix had a leadoff single. Connolly would get two outs before walking the next two to load the bases. James Miglin, who finished with four RBI, was hit by a pitch to give Toledo a one-run lead then Jeff Cola, who was 2-for-6 with two RBI, flared a single to center to score two and give the Rockets the 10-7 advantage.
Matt Kuna (2-0) earned the win in relief for Toledo. He pitched the final four innings, allowing one hit, no runs and three walks with two strikeouts. Ryan Connolly (0-1) suffered the loss. The junior pitched three innings, allowing four hits, four runs (three earned), four walks and a hit batter. Connolly had only allowed one walk in his first five outings of the 2012 season.
Toledo jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the game. Leadoff hitter Corfman reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt and walk to Mark Lapikas, catcher Miglin cleared the bases with a three-run home run down the left field line.
In the home half, Coast got one of those runs back. Jacob May, who had missed the last eight games due to injury, hit his first career home run on an 1-0 fastball, which was his first swing since the injury.
The Rockets regained a three-run lead in the third. Corfman delivered a leadoff double and, two batters later, scored on a Lapikas RBI single.
In the fourth, Coastal tied the game at 4-4. Rich Witten drew a leadoff walk and Daniel Bowman, who was 3-for-4 in the contest, extended his hit streak to six with a two-run home run. Tucker Frawley reached on an error and a pair of singles loaded the bases with one out, setting the stage for Chris Suseck's sacrifice fly to drive in Frawley.
Toledo used the long ball to answer right back in the fifth. Leadoff hitter Matt Delewski reached on an error and, two batters later, Corfman homered off the top of the left-field foul pole to put the Rockets up 6-4. In the home half, May drew a walk. Then, on a hit-and-run, May reached third on a ground out. On the play, Toledo tried to throw out May at third, but an errant throw allowed May to score, making the score 6-5.
Coastal took its first lead of the game, 7-6, with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Bowman hit a bloop single down the right field line and Frawley followed with a seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield. A ground out moved the two up 90 feet and Gilliam lined a two-run single through the left side of the infield.
Creel had two hits, extending his hit streak to six and reaching base safely streak to eight. Witten drew a walk, Bowman had three hits and was hit by a pitch and Frawley singled to extend their reaching base safely streak to eight as well.
