Coastal Lets Lead Slip Away; Falls 11-6 to Furman

Coastal Carolina hosts Ball State, Harvard and Ohio State this weekend

MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina raced out to a 5-0 lead but Furman scored 11 unanswered runs to claim an 11-6 victory Wednesday afternoon at Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Paladins improve to 10-3 and the Chanticleers fall to 4-8.

Coastal Carolina, who tallied a season-high 13 hits, jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first. Ted Blackman had a leadoff single and moved to second on Jacob May's sacrifice bunt. Jake Kane executed a hit and run, driving in Blackman with an RBI single. Alex Buccilli followed with an RBI double to right field. Two batters later, Justin Creel reach on a throwing error, putting Creel on second and allowing Buccilli to score. Zach Remillard lined an RBI single to center to score Creel for the fourth run of the inning.

The Chants added a run in the third. After loading the bases with no outs, Jake Kane scored on a double play turned by the Paladins.

Furman tied the game in the fourth, sending nine men to the plate. Taylor Johnson hit a leadoff single and moved to third on Paul Nitto's double down the third base line. Alex Abrams followed with a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Johnson. After loading the bases on back-to-back walks, Patrick Corbett recorded a strikeout before allowing an RBI single by Jordan Simpson to make the score 5-2. Coastal looked to be out of the inning with a fly ball, but an error on the play allowed three runs to score to knot the game at 5-5.

The Paladins sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth and took a 10-5 lead. Johnson had a leadoff double and Furman put runners on the corners with a single by Nitto. Abrams followed with a sacrifice fly for a 6-5 lead. Back-to-back singles by Griffin Davis and Chris Olmstede gave the Paladins their seventh run of the game and put runners on the corners again. A balk allowed Davis to score for an 8-5 Furman advantage. Furman would load the bases thanks to a catcher's interference and a walk before Hunter Burton drew a walk, forcing home a run. With the bases still loaded, Johnson capped the scoring with an infield, RBI single.

A two-out, solo home run in the sixth by Olmstede made it 11 unanswered for the Paladins and a 11-5 lead. Coastal got that run back in the bottom of the sixth. Remillard had a leadoff single and scored on an RBI, hit-and-run double by Nick Oberg to provide the 11-6 final.

Alex Abrams (1-0) was credited with the win. He pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing five hits, one run and one walk with a strikeout. Ryan Morse earned the save, pitching the final 3.1 innings and allowing just one hit. Corbett (0-1) suffered the loss. The sophomore surrendered seven hits, seven runs (four earned) and two walks in 4.0 innings.

Coastal Carolina will return to action this weekend, hosting Ball State, Harvard and Ohio State as part of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
