Baseball Gets Back on Track with 4-1 Win Over FAU
March 1, 2013
MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina pitchers Tyler Poole, Brock Hunter and Ryan Connollycombined for 10 strikeouts with just one walk to lead the Chanticleers (4-4) to a 4-1 win over Florida Atlantic (5-4) Friday evening and snap a three-game CCU losing streak as part of the Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Poole (1-1) earned his first collegiate win after redshirting his true freshman season in 2012 and suffering a loss in his debut at #1 North Carolina (Feb. 18). The Hickory, N.C., native scattered six hits over 5.1 innings allowing the one run with a walk and four strikeouts. Hunter was brought in with one out, runners on second and third and CCU holding a 3-1 lead. The freshman left-hander struck out Mike Spano looking and gave way to Connolly for the remainder of the game. Connolly did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out five over 3.1 scoreless innings for his first save of the season.
Coastal Carolina took advantage of two errors to score twice in the first inning. Jacob May singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, which allowed Ted Blackman to reach first. Alex Buccilli laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error allowed May to score and Blackman took third. Colin Hering followed with an RBI ground out for Coastal's 2-0 lead.
Florida Atlantic threatened in the second, loading the bases with two outs before Poole got Sean Murrell to pop up to the catcher in foul territory to escape.
However, the Owls did cut their deficit in half in the top of the third. Nathan Pittman hit a leadoff triple and scored on Levi Meyer's sacrifice fly to center.
Coastal got that run back on the fifth. Nick Oberg drew a leadoff walk and, two batters later, scored on Buccilli's two-out, RBI double down the left field line. The Chants manufactured another run in the seventh for a 4-1 lead. May had a one-out double off the left field wall, stole second and scored when Blackman reached on an error.
Florida Atlantic starter Austin Gomber (1-1) was saddled with the loss. He allowed five hits and four runs (two earned) with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach will continue Saturday with three games. Saturday's schedule is UMBC-West Virginia (10 am), Indiana-Coastal (1:30 pm) and Florida Atlantic-NC State (5 pm).
The event concludes Sunday with Indiana-UMBC at 10 am, West Virginia-Florida Atlantic at 1:30 pm and NC State-Coastal at 5 pm.
