Baseball Falls 10-0 to Wichita State at Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach
Feb. 24, 2014
MYRTLE BEACH - Wichita State (6-2) took advantage of four Coastal Carolina (2-5) errors and Casey Gillaspie blew the game open with a three-run home run in the eighth inning to claim a 10-0 victory over the Chanticleers in the finale of the 15th Annual Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach, played at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Overall, just three of Wichta State's 10 runs were earned as a result of Coastal's errors.
The Shockers broke the ice with a run in the top of the third inning. Tanner Kirk hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Tanner Dearman's RBI single. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth. Gillaspie delivered a leadoff single, moved to third on Chase Simpson's single and scored on Tyler Baker's RBI ground out.
Wichita State took advantage of back-to-back CCU errors on sacrifice bunt attempts to add two runs in the fifth and lead 4-0. Kirk drew a leadoff walk. Cody Bobbit followed with a sac bunt, but reached first on a throwing error. Dearman also came through with a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error allowed Kirk to score and put runners on second and third. Coastal intentionally walked Gillaspie to load the bases and new CCU pitcher Cole Schaefer would walk Simpson to force in a run. Schaefer then induced an inning-ending double play to limit the damage.
For the fourth consecutive inning, Wichita State put the leadoff batter on base and scored to push its cushion to 5-0. Garrett Bayliff and Micah Green had back-to-back singles and moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt. Bobbit plated Bayliff with an RBI ground out.
The Shockers took advantage of two Chanticleer errors and a three-run home run to score five in the eighth and lead 10-0. Kirk reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Pinch hitter Zair Koeiman made the Chants pay with an RBI single to left field. With two out, Dearman reached on an error which put runners on second and third. Daniel Kihle followed with an infield single to drive in Bobbit. Gillaspie cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right field.
Wichita starter Cale Elam (1-0) pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts. CCU freshman Dalton Moats (0-1) took the loss, allowing four hits and four runs (two earned) in four-plus innings.
Coastal was led offensively by Richard Carter, who went 2-for-4.
Coastal Carolina will return to action next weekend, hosting the Caravelle Resort Tournament. Teams include James Madison, Marshall, West Virginia, Duke and Rhode Island. The Chanticleers will host Rhode Island Friday at 5:30 pm, West Virginia Saturday at 1:30 pm, Marshall Saturday at 8:30 pm and Duke Sunday at 5:0 pm.
