Feb. 20, 2014
MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina scored three runs in the third inning and CCU pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts as the Chanticleers (2-2) held on for a 3-2 win over George Mason (3-1) Thursday evening in the first game of the 15th Annual Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach, played at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Due to impending weather, Friday's schedule will be altered with tentative times set for both games. Currently, George Mason will face Illinois at 9 am and Wichita State will face Connecticut at 7 pm.
Coastal freshman starter Cole Schaefer (1-0) sat down the only nine batters he faced in order before leaving the game on a predetermined pitch count. He struck out the first five Patriots he faced, including three straight looking to open the game, and a total of six.
As Schaefer exited, Coastal's offense came to life by putting three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Richard Carter reached on a leadoff single. Anthony Marks laid down a sacrifice bunt but a throwing error allowed Carter to score from first and Marks ended up on third. Connor Owings plated Marks with a sacrifice fly to center field. With the bases empty, Michael Paez singled and moved to second thanks to a Colin Hering walk. The two stole third and second and Zach Remillard followed with an RBI ground out.
Fellow CCU freshman Zac Burke followed Schaefer's outing with an impressive one of his own, pitching three scoreless innings with two hits, no walks and three strikeouts.
George Mason, which had only two hits through six innings, got a pair of doubles down the right field line in the top of the seventh to make the score 3-1. Blaise Fernandez hit the first one past a diving Carter at first and two batters later, Ray Toto doubled to drive in Fernandez.
The Patriots made it a one-run game, 3-2, in the eighth without a hit. Brandon Gum drew a leadoff walk and Chris Cook was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Josh Leemhuis, Gum scored on a passed ball. After the run scored, Coastal freshman pitcher Chase Adkins struck out Luke Willis and CCU closer Tyler Poole stranded the runner on third as he ended the threat by striking out Tucker Tobin.
Poole shut down the Patriots in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
For George Mason, starter Jared Gaynor (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing five hits and three runs over seven innings.
Coastal Carolina will return to action Saturday at 1:30 pm, hosting Illinois. Also playing Saturday will be Wichita State and George Mason at 10 am and George Mason and Connecticut at 5 pm.
