Coastal Carolina Falls at #1 North Carolina, 7-1
Feb. 18, 2013
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina centerfielder Chaz Frank accounted for four runs in the first two innings to lead his top-ranked Tar Heels (3-0) to a 7-1 win over Coastal Carolina (2-1) Monday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
Today's game was not originally on the schedule but was added as each team had to cancel a contest this past Saturday. The teams will meet again in Chapel Hill on April 16 at 6 pm.
The Tar Heels managed only eight hits in scoring their seven runs, but they were timely as the Chanticleer pitchers walked six and the defense committed four errors.
North Carolina grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first. Frank singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Colin Moran plated Frank with a sacrifice fly to right center field.
The Tar Heels tacked on three runs in the second. After a double and two walks to load the bases, Frank lined a three-run triple down the right field line. In the third, UNC added a fifth run. Moran started the home half with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error. Syke Bolt put runners on the corners with an infield single and Cody Stubbs followed with a sacrifice fly to center.
The CCU bullpen combined for 4.1 scoreless innings but was victim to an error in the seventh to give that run back for a 6-1 lead. With one out, Moran reached on an error, took second on a wild pitch and was on third after a passed ball. Bolt snuck a ball past a drawn-in infield to drive in Moran.
Another Chanticleer error in the eighth inning led to North Carolina's seventh run of the game. The first two UNC batters reached, one on a single and one on an error and a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. After an intentional walk, Aaron Burke recorded a strikeout, but walked the next batter to force in a run. Burke got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Frank, Bolt and Stubbs each had two hits for UNC. Relief pitcher Chris McCue (1-0) was credited with the win, allowing just one hit and a walk with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Coastal Carolina will return to action this weekend (Feb. 22-24) hosting Elon, #8 Kentucky, Kansas State and Marshall for the Caravelle Resort Tournament.
