FLORENCE - Coastal Carolina opened the 2013 baseball season Friday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over James Madison. The game was played on the campus of Francis Marion - at Sparrow Stadium - and marks the eighth-straight year the Chanticleers have started the season with a win.

Coastal Carolina and James Madison will continue the three-game series Saturday at Myrtle Beach's TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. First pitch is set for 4 pm. Gate 1 at Pelicans Ballpark will not open until 3 pm and all fans will need to park across the street at Broadway at the Beach due to the annual Myrtle Beach Marathon.

Colin Hering led the Chants, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Jacob May was 2-for-4 with what proved to be the game-winning RBI. Brothers Will and Zach Remillard each contributed a hit with Will driving in two and Zach tallying one RBI.

Tyler Herb, as he did last season against the Dukes, got the win on opening day. The junior allowed seven hits and three runs over five innings with three walks and a strikeout. The Chanticleer bullpen closed out the win. Patrick Corbett struck out two over two innings and Austin Kerr struck out one in his one inning. Freshman Seth Lamando worked the ninth to earn his first career save, striking one and allowing one hit.

Coastal Carolina got the 2013 season off on a positive note as it jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. With runners on second and third, catcher W. Remillard delivered a two-run single to centerfield, driving in Jake Kane and Alex Buccilli.

The Dukes got on the scoreboard, making the score 2-1, in the third after consecutive singles by Colby Roberts, Johnny Bladel and Ty McFarland. However, Herb escaped further damage by getting a pop out and an inning-ending double play.

James Madison added two runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Cole McInturff drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Casey Goss drove in McInturff with a two-out single to right and scored one batter later on Robert's RBI triple.

The Chanticleers regained the lead in the home half of the fourth. Colin Hering singled and moved to second on a sac bunt. Z. Remillard hit an RBI single to left-center field, stole second and scored on May's RBI single to right to give Coastal a 4-3 advantage.

James Madison threatened in the fifth thanks to back-to-back, two-out singles by Tyler Gregory and McInturff. However, Gregory tried to take third on McInturff's single to center but was thrown out at third by May to end the frame.

Coastal nearly added an insurance run in the eighth. With two on, Brian Pruett hit a line drive down the right field line but JMU's McInturff made an impressive diving catch to end the inning.

James Madison starter Patrick Toohers suffered the loss. He allowed seven hits and four runs over six complete with two walks and three strikeouts. McFarland, McInturff and Roberts each had three hits for the Dukes.
