Initially came to Coastal as a dual-sport athlete on a basketball scholarship, but focused on just baseball starting in 2013 ... 2014 (So.): Made the move from starter to closer ... Pitched in 18 games and recorded six saves before missing the last month due to injury ... Held opponents to a .222 batting average ... Converted 6-of-9 save opportunities ... In his first seven appearances of 2014, surrendered just one hit and two walks (one intentional) with eight strikeouts in 8.2 innings ... First collegiate save came as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts in the Pitt finale ... Earned the save in 1.1 innings versus George mason, throwing 15 pitches with two Ks ... Notched save number three with a 1-2-3 ninth versus Marshall ... While he allowed his first walk of the season (in his sixth appearance) versus Elon, he pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to earn his fourth save thanks to two punch outs ... Escaped two bases loaded jams at High Point to get save number five to preserve the 1-0 win ... Entered with two out and bases loaded in the eighth, getting a line out to right field to end the inning ... In the ninth, gave up his first hit of the season and the next batter reached on an error to put runners on second and third ... Pitched 3.0 scoreless to get the win at #29 North Carolina, allowing one hit and fanning two -- both in the 11th inning ... Allowed a hit and walk with a strikeout in pitching the ninth in CCU's 3-0 win over College of Charleston for his sixth save of the season.
2013 (RFr.): Started all 14 games he appeared, serving as Coastal's #3 starter ... Tied for the team lead with six wins, going 6-2 ... Was the starting pitcher in three of CCU's four shutouts ... Only walked 17 in 58.1 innings with 38 strikeouts ... Had a tough outing in his debut (at #1 North Carolina), however, in the four starts afterwards, was 3-0 (he did not pitch the requisite 5 innings to get the win vs Akron) with a 1.61 ERA and walked just one batter with 18 strikeouts in 22.1 innings ... Best outing of his freshman season was versus Gardner-Webb, pitching seven innings and allowed six hits, one run, no walks and season-high six strikeouts ... After a tough outing at VMI, bounced back to get the win and improve to 4-1, pitching a predetermined 4.0 innings versus The Citadel ... Was dominant versus College of Charleston, pitching a predetermined three innings and striking out six with no walks as CCU would go on to fan a school-record 19 in the 14-inning affair ... At Presbyterian, scattered five hits, relying on his defense with numerous ground ball outs ... Pitched 5.2 scoreless versus the Blue Hose in the 1-0 win with one walk and four strikeouts ... Pitched 5.2 scoreless in getting the win in the UNC Asheville finale ... Allowed six hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
2012 (Fr.): Redshirted the 2011-12 basketball season due to injury, and a second injury forced him to sit out the 2012 baseball season as well.
Prior to Coastal Carolina: 38th Round, 20th pick (1,162nd overall pick) by Boston Red Sox in the 2011 Major League Draft ... A two-sport standout at Hickory High School ... Named honorable mention All-American by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball ... Led the Red Tornadoes to a 17-11 baseball record as a senior and the fourth round of NCHSSA 3A playoffs ... Was 7-3 as a senior ... Had 96 strikeouts in 65 innings, allowing just 45 hits ... For his career, struck out 239 batters ... Threw a complete-game two-hitter versus St. Stephens ... In basketball, averaged 17 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists last season to help lead Hickory High School to a 26-4 overall record and a No. 3 ranking in North Carolina ... Selected to the all-district first team, was named all-region and was named to the Charlotte Observer All-Star team in his conference.
