CCU Dir. of Track & field Sandy Fowler to Serve on USA’s IAAF World Championship Staff
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina director of track and field Sandy Fowler has been named assistant coach for the United States’ national team for the 2017 IAAF World Outdoor Championships this summer. The event will take place in London, England, from August 3-14.
Fowler will serve as the women’s throws coach at the 16th IAAF World Championships, which brings the world’s top athletes together every two years in an Olympic-caliber event. Among those vying for a spot on Team USA is Amber Campbell, a two-time Olympian in the hammer and member of the Coastal Carolina University and Big South Conference Halls of Fame.
“It is always an honor to represent your country in international competitions,” Fowler said. “As a coach, you take these opportunities to heart because your peers are the ones that select you for the staff. This will also be huge for Coastal Carolina as I will have the platform as a USA staff member to talk about this great University during competition and on the international recruiting trail.”
Fowler, who just completed her first season at Coastal, is no stranger to being a part of Team USA at international events. She represented Team USA as an assistant coach at the 2014 Pan-American Sports Festival in Mexico City, Mexico, as well as the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia. She was Team USA head coach at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Prior to coaching premier events, Fowler excelled in the shot put as she was a nine-time All-American and national champion. She was an alternate on the 1980 United States Olympic team and competed internationally for the United States in both the 1981 World University Games in Romania and at the 1981 Pan Pacific Games in New Zealand.
