12 Chanticleers Qualify For NCAA East Prelims

A dozen Coastal student-athletes will represent the university in Jacksonville, Fla.

CONWAY - 12 student-athletes from Coastal Carolina’s men’s and women’s track and field programs qualified for the 2016 NCAA East Preliminary Round and will represent the university at the meet, scheduled for May 26-28 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.

The men’s team qualified six individuals and a relay team, while the women’s program will be sending two student-athletes to Jacksonville. The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which is slated for June 9-11 in Eugene, Ore.

On the men’s side, redshirt senior Desmond Wallace will make his second straight trip to the preliminary round and will compete in the 110m HH, an event he ranks ninth in in the East. The Columbia, S.C., native holds the CCU record in the event, as he set a mark of 13.68 this year. Wallace is a two-time Big South champion in the 110m hurdles.

Joining Wallace in the 110m HH is teammate Kevondre’ Hunt. The junior hurdler enters the field as the 43rd seed after running a time of 14.16, which also ranks him No. 3 all-time for Coastal. Hunt was the 2016 Big South runner-up at 110m HH. In 2014, he earned All-Big South honors in both the 110 and 400m hurdles, placing second in the 110 and third in the 400.

Coastal’s 4x100 relay team of Therius Styles, Ryan McCain, Kahlim Denmark and Chiason Tenkiang will be making their second straight trip to the NCAA East prelims. They come in as the No. 23 seed, after qualifying with a time of 40.24. They were the runner-up in the Big South Championship and rank second all-time for CCU. Tre Stanley joins them as an alternate.

Redshirt sophomore Jerome Coaxum Jr. will make his NCAA debut in the 400m hurdles after setting the Coastal record with a time of 51.94. The Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native enters the competition as the No. 34 seed. In 2015, Coaxum Jr. earned All-Big South honors as a member of the Big South champion 4x400 relay team. He was also the 2016 Big South Champion at 400mIH and as part of the 4x400m Relay.

Sophomore Robert Castellani will also make his NCAA debut. The Archbald, Pa., native earned the No. 46 seed with a throw of 64.46m (211-60), a mark that ranks him fifth all-time at CCU. Castellani came in fourth at this year’s Big South Championships and set a personal best on his final throw.

Devontaye Edwards, CCU’s school record holder in the discus, heads to Jacksonville as the No. 46 seed in the event. The Sumter, S.C., native qualified for the event with an impressive mark of 52.80m (173-30).

Redshirt sophomore Aynslee van Graan will be representing Coastal in the 1500m, an event she holds the CCU record in. Van Graan’s time of 4:22.11 scored the No. 42 seed in the East. This year, she earned All-Big South honors with a second-place finish (4:27.96) in the women's 1500m at the conference championships.

Senior Amirah Al-Bayyinah will make her second straight trip to the preliminary round and will compete in the triple jump. The Winchester, Va., native is Coastal’s No. 2 all-time performer in the event. She heads into the meet as the No. 47 seed, as she set a mark of 12.55m (41-02.25).

Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., will host the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships from June 9-11. The top-12 finishers in each event at the NCAA East Preliminary Round will advance to compete in the event. They will be joined in Eugene by 12 qualifiers per event from the NCAA West Preliminary Round, which takes place in Lawrence, Kan.
