Coastal Carolina Mourns the loss of Jamie McCarthy
The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics is mourning the loss of former cross country and track and field performer Jamie McCarthy. McCarthy was involved in a serious auto accident near his home in Myrtle Beach.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, Feb. 25, at 1:00 p.m., at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, the family will receive visitors after the service. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to assist the family with travel and funeral expenses: Jamie-McCarthy-Memorial-Fund.
The Jamie McCarthy Memorial Mile Fun Run/Walk will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) on the track at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach prior to the first running event for the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. For anyone who wants to run/
McCarthy attended North Monastery in Kinsale, County Cork Ireland. He was a member of the 2004 Irish National Team that won the silver medal at the European XC Championships Under 20 division. He enrolled at Coastal Carolina University in January of 2006. In his first season, he was a member of the Big South Championship Outdoor TF Team and had an all-conference 3rd place finish in the 5000m. He was named 2006 Freshman of the Year at the Big South XC Champs. Jamie had three all-conference finishes in XC ('06, '08, and '09) and finished his track career with personal bests of 1:54.14 (800m), 3:50.82 (1500m), 14:34.31 (5000m), which all still rank in the top 10 and still holds the CCU mile record of 4:15.12. He graduated from Coastal with a bachelor’s of arts in Communication and a minor in Global Study on May 8, 2010.
