Coastal Carolina' Nadeel Wildschutt Places Fourth at NCAA Regional; Advances to Nationals
Charlottesville, Va. - Coastal Carolina freshman Nadeel Wildschutt had a time of 29:03.4 to place fourth at the NCAA Cross Country Southeast Region Championship Friday at Panorama Farms.
With his finish, Wildschutt was named NCAA Cross Country All-Southeast Region and earned a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championship held in Louisville, Ky., next Saturday (Nov. 18). He will be the second Chanticleer on the men's side to earn a berth at the NCAA National Championship, joining Hall of Famer Terah Kipchiris, who accomplished the feat twice.
Wildschutt completed the 10k race with a time of 29:03.4, 18 seconds behind the 2017 champion, Lawrence Kipkoech of Campbell. Wildschutt was third after two kilometers and second midway through the race. However, the eventual champion, Kipkoech made his move with just over three kilometers to go as he, Wildschutt and eight others were virtually tied at the 3K checkpoint. With two kilometers left, it was a four-man race between Kipkoech, Wilschutt, Liberty's Azaria Kirwa and Campbell's Amon Kemboi.
Wildschutt, like Kipchiris, was a conference champion, winning the 2017 Sun Belt title on Oct. 28. Wilschutt, who won four races this fall, swept the Sun Belt men's cross country individual awards as he was named Most Outstanding Performer, Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
