Saayman Earns Fourth Big South Honor of the Season
Oct. 25, 2013
CONWAY - Letitia Saayman of the Coastal Carolina women's cross country team has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for a league-high fourth time of the 2013 season. To date, Saayman has earned the conference's weekly award after every meet she has run in this season.
At Coastal's latest outing, the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., Saayman ran the 5k course in 18:12 to lead the Chanticleers and place sixth in the field of 216 runners. Her time was the second-fastest in Coastal's history on the course.
Saayman's previous awards came after placing first at the Carolina Challenge and Big South Preview/VMI Invitational, and 51st at the Paul Short Run.
Freshman Kyla van Graan also earned Runner of the Week honors earlier this season after winning the CCU Invitational, bringing Coastal's total number of weekly honors on the season to five.
On the men's side, junior Evan Niciphor received honorable mention from the conference after placing 15th at the Blue Ridge Open with an 8k time of 25:13.
The Chanticleer cross country teams, having closed out the regular-season portion of their schedules, will compete in the Big South championships on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Vista Links Golf Course in Buena Vista, Va. In the Chants' previous effort at the course, Saayman placed first to help Coastal win the team title in the women's 5k, while Joseph Keitt crossed fifth overall in the men's 8k to help Coastal to a fifth-place finish.
