Women Picked Third, Men Fifth, In Cross Country Preseason Poll

Charlotte, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women’s and men’s cross country teams were picked to finish third and fifth, respectively, in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll of the league’s head cross country coaches, as announced today by the conference office. 

Coastal’s women’s squad received four first-place votes, a third of the total 12, and finished with 128 points. The 2013 women’s team will feature 13 runners, including last year’s Big South Freshman of the Year and all-conference honoree Letitia Saayman, as well as senior Emily Marchini, who led the Chants in three of their six outings. 

Defending champions Liberty were voted first among the women’s teams, collecting four first-place votes and 134 points. High Point collected the final four first-place votes and finished in second with 130 points. Winthrop finished in fourth with 102 points, while Campbell and UNC Asheville finished with 85 points apiece to tie for fifth place. VMI came in at No. 7 with 78 points, Radford finished in eighth 65 points and Charleston Southern claimed 52 points to finish in ninth. Gardner-Webb, Longwood and Presbyterian College rounded out the women’s squads with 37, 26 and 14 points, respectively. 

On the men’s side, Coastal collected 94 points to finish in the fifth slot. The Chanticleer men will return five of their nine runners, including Ryan Beckley, Tyler Cummings, Evan Niciphor, Cameron Wells and 2012 all-conference honoree Joseph Keitt. 

Liberty, who has won the Big South title for the past eight years, took first place in the men’s poll after taking all 12 first-place votes to finish with 144 points. High Point finished second with 131 points, Campbell took third with 111 points and VMI placed fourth with 99 points. UNC Asheville finished behind Coastal in sixth with 85 points, while Winthrop took seventh with 83. Radford notched 64 points to finish eighth, Longwood garnered 40 points to place ninth and Gardner-Webb claimed 39 points to finish 10th. Charleston Southern and Presbyterian College rounded out the conference with 33 and 13 points, respectively. 

The Chanticleer men and women open their season on Friday when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to compete in the Carolina Challenge. The Coastal teams’ will then host their annual home meet, the CCU Invitational, on Sept. 13 at the Hackler Golf Course. Both meets begin at 6 p.m.
