CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's cross country team has been ranked third in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll of the league's head cross country coaches, as announced today by the conference office.
Coming off their Big South Women's Cross Country Championship in 2011, the High Point Panthers collected seven first-place votes and 136 points. Liberty found itself at No. 2 with three top bids and 132 points. Coastal Carolina was selected third with one first-place vote and 123 points, followed by VMI with one top vote and 101 points. In fifth was Campbell with 100 points and Winthrop came in at the No. 6 slot with 77 points. UNC Asheville landed at No. 7 with 74 points, while Charleston Southern came in at the No. 8 position with 58 points. Gardner-Webb's 51 points were good for No. 9 and at No. 10 was Radford with 40 points. Longwood collected 28 points to finish No. 11 and Presbyterian College closed out the voting with 16 points.
Third in last year's Big South Championship, Coastal's women's squad returns six runners from last season including juniors Emily Marchini, Stephanie Taylor and Shelby Nicosia, and senior Janel Reeves, all of whom finished in the top 25 in the 2011 Big South Championship. Also returning is senior Jessica Dennison and junior Seanna Kautz who both posted 6K personal bests at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional.
Head coach Alan Connie welcomes nine freshmen to the team including Jackie Brengal, Sullivan Hamilton, Hannah Hetzel, Regina Peattie, Letitia Saayman, Hailey Shingler, Samantha Stady, LaChelsie Thomas and Kyllian Warman. Also joining the squad is Erica Patterson, a sophomore transfer from USC Sumter.
CCU's women's cross country team will open their 2012 season at home as they host the Coastal Carolina University Invitational Friday, Aug. 31 at Hackler Golf Course. The women's 5K begins at 6 p.m. The women will be followed by the men's race that begins at 6:30 p.m.
